Travertine

Travertine

Travertine is an interesting natural stone, generally harder than limestone but softer than marble. It is a kind of limestone deposited by the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs) or streams saturated with calcium carbonate. The colour of the stone is due to the iron content in travertine. As they are naturally made due to earth pressure and temperature the content of iron varies and so does colour in each batch. Moreover, you also get variety of textures under the categorization of travertine;thumbled, brushed and polished, etc. As old an option it is for a sturdy and reliable building material, travertine tiles remain to be a highly diverse natural stone, suitable for all kinds of applications.

Travertine Cut Type & Finishes

Travertine is removed from the earth in large blocks before it is cut into what can be recognized as travertine tile. It may be cut in any of the following ways:

Cross Cut

The travertine is cut with the grain of the stone bedding and on the same layer as it is formed in the earth. This makes for a more uniformed texture and colour.

Vein Cut

The travertine is cut across several layers of the stone bedding, making for a more mottled, tiger-stripe effect when cut into tiles. After the travertine is quarried, it is strictly selected for color variances, and further assessed after it is cut for holes and chipped edges. Beyond the selection process, the tiles may be subject to any of the following processes:

Rough Travertine Finish (unfilled)

Travertine naturally has holes and cavities on the surface. It is adequate to be used in outdoor coverings and flooring, borders, scallops, columns, fireplaces ….

Tumbled Travertine Finish

These tiles or slabs have a distinctive ‘brushed & unfilled’ antiquated-surface which gives it a unique textured look & feel. Honed Travertine Finish The surface of the tile is sanded to create a matt finish. It is very suitable for outdoor coverings, outdoor flooring, pool decking, yards, etc. This is the type of finish most demanded in the USA.

Polished Travertine Finish

The travertine is sanded and polished, producing a shiny look.

Filled Travertine Finish

The pores in the travertine tile are filled with coloured resin or cement to produce a pristine, solid surface.

Brushed Travertine Finish

A wire brush is used to give the surface of the travertine tile a worn and textured surface.
